When the world is too loud, build your own little cockpit. 🚗

Who it's for

Numan has described Cars as being about feeling safe inside your car, sealed off from the people around you, and he has spoken openly about having Asperger's and finding social situations hard.

What it is

'Cars' was Gary Numan's first solo single, released in August 1979, and appears on his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle. Numan said it was inspired by a road-rage incident in London traffic in which people tried to pull him from his car, and he escaped by locking the doors and driving off. The song presents the car as a protective, private space set apart from other people.
