Fifth graders. Ten weeks. One citywide dance-off. 💃
It bottles the giddy, wobbly feeling of preparing for something big: awkward first partnerships, shaky steps that turn into confident ones, and a room full of kids who can't decide if they're terrified or thrilled.
Mad Hot Ballroom is a 2005 documentary directed by Marilyn Agrelo and released by Paramount Classics. It follows 11-year-old fifth-graders at three New York City public schools, in Tribeca, Bensonhurst and Washington Heights, through a 10-week ballroom dance program that builds to a citywide competition. Classroom lessons mix with the kids' candid reflections on friendship, the opposite sex and their neighborhoods.
