Soul Surfer

Film · 2011 · Dir. Sean McNamara; screenplay by Sean McNamara, Deborah Schwartz, Douglas Schwartz & Michael Berk, based on the 2004 book by Bethany Hamilton with Sheryl Berk and Rick Bundschuh.

She lost her arm at 13. A month later she was back in the water. 🌊

Who it's for

For anyone recovering from a sudden injury, the film is honest that getting back up is not a straight line: Bethany's first comeback contest goes badly, she gets frustrated, quits, and feels her friendship strain before she finds her footing again.

Discouraged→Hopeful

Feelings it meets

What it is

Based on the true story of Hawaiian surfer Bethany Hamilton. In 2003, 13-year-old Bethany is a rising competitor on Kauai when a tiger shark bites off her left arm while she is surfing with her best friend's family. She survives after emergency surgery and, with her family's support, gets back in the water and relearns surfing with one arm.
