Every family visit has two conversations: the one out loud, and the one nobody says. 🦋
Almost nothing happens in Still Walking except one long summer visit, and that is its power: the hurt lives in small comments, pointed silences and old routines that any adult child will recognise.
The Yokoyama family gathers, as they do every year, to mark the anniversary of their eldest son Junpei's drowning, which happened while he was rescuing a boy. Over one 24-hour visit, surviving son Ryota brings his new wife Yukari and her young son Atsushi to his parents' home. There his father Kyohei is still disappointed that Ryota did not become a doctor, and his mother Toshiko keeps Junpei's memory close.
