What it is
Robert Zemeckis's 2000 drama stars Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems analyst who becomes the sole survivor when his cargo plane crashes into the Pacific during a storm. Stranded on a deserted island, he teaches himself to make fire, fish and find fresh water, and he turns a volleyball marked with his handprint into a companion he names Wilson.
