For the ones who fell in love while hiding what was happening at home. 🎧 Eleanor & Park.
Alternating chapters let the reader live inside both teens' heads: Eleanor's constant vigilance, shame and disbelief that anyone could like her, and Park's wonder at her.
Rainbow Rowell's young adult novel is set in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1986–87 and alternates between the perspectives of two 16-year-old misfits. Eleanor, new at school and living in a cramped house under an abusive stepfather, Richie, ends up sitting next to Park, a half-Korean boy from a stable, loving family, on the school bus. The two slowly bond over comic books and mixtapes of 1980s music.
In print; widely available from libraries (Libby/Hoopla, where held) and as an audiobook. Not public domain.
Heads up: Child abuse by a stepfather.
