Effi Briest

Book · 1894–1895 · Theodor Fontane (translations: Hugh Rorrison & Helen Chambers, Penguin; Mike Mitchell, Oxford)

Married at 17 to her mom's ex. One old affair, and every 'proper' person in her life chose rules over her. Effi deserved better. 🕊️

Who it's for

Fontane's restrained, gently ironic narration lets readers see clearly what Effi cannot: a lively seventeen-year-old married to a much older, correct man, left lonely in a strange town, and later punished for an old affair not because anyone feels it but becau.
