You don't need the perfect words. You need to ask, and then listen.
People who fear a loved one is suicidal often freeze because they worry about saying the wrong thing; Briggs, who spent years talking with people in crisis, models that listening matters more than perfect words.
In this TED2014 talk, California Highway Patrol sergeant Kevin Briggs draws on his years patrolling the southern end of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, where he spoke with people who were considering suicide. He shares stories of people he talked with and listened to at that moment of crisis, and offers advice to people whose loved ones may be considering suicide.
