George Eliot's 1861 novel follows Silas Marner, a weaver in the small religious community of Lantern Yard who is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds, apparently framed by his best friend William Dane, and loses his fiancee, his faith and his place in the community. He moves to the village of Raveloe, where he lives in isolation, weaving and hoarding the gold he earns.
