Nobody handed you the rules of being a man in writing. Once you can see the box, you can step out of it.
Many men absorbed rules about toughness and emotion without ever seeing them named; giving them a label (the man box) makes an invisible script visible and therefore questionable.
In this TEDWomen 2010 talk, Tony Porter, co-founder of A Call to Men, urges men to reject the pressure to 'act like a man.' He names the 'man box', the set of expectations boys are taught about masculinity, and uses personal stories, including one about his father crying, to show how those expectations can lead to disrespect and abuse toward women and other men.
