Your family's story isn't one story. It's twelve people telling it wrong at the same time, with love. 🦃
Love Medicine tells a family's story in many voices across fifty years, starting with June Kashpaw's death in the snow and radiating out to the people she left.
Louise Erdrich's 1984 debut novel is made up of linked stories told by different narrators. It follows the Kashpaw, Lamartine and Morrissey families on and around an Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota from the 1930s to the 1980s.
In print (Harper Perennial; the 2009 'newly revised' edition is current), in libraries (Libby/Hoopla) and as an audiobook. Not public domain. Note that 1984, 1993 and 2009 editions differ in chapters.
