The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen

Book · 1835–1872 · Hans Christian Andersen (recommended translation: Tiina Nunnally, ed. Jackie Wullschlager)

Plot twist from 1843: you were never an ugly duck. You were a swan stuck in a duck pond. 🦢

Who it's for

Andersen writes from the outsider's side: the reader feels the duckling's shame and exhaustion from the inside before the reveal, so the story validates the experience of rejection rather than skipping straight to the happy ending.
