A museum built a square for trust and caring. Then everyone had to actually care.
The Square is built to make audiences squirm: it keeps asking what people do when helping would cost them something, and how often fine ideals stay on the gallery wall.
Ruben Östlund's Palme d'Or-winning satire follows Christian, a respected Stockholm museum curator preparing an installation called The Square, described as a sanctuary of trust and caring. After his phone and wallet are stolen, he tries to get them back with a threatening letter campaign that drags an innocent boy into the fallout.
