Who it's for
One of Portishead's most aching songs, Beth Gibbons sings of a deep, nameless wrongness and the struggle to find a way through it.

What it is
"Roads" is the eighth track on Portishead's 1994 debut album Dummy, written by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. It is a slow, down-tempo trip-hop song built on a descending Rhodes electric piano figure, with Gibbons' fragile vocal and strings that swell toward the climax.
