"Don't Know Why" was written by Jesse Harris, who first released it on his 1999 album with the Ferdinandos. Norah Jones recorded a cover, produced by Jones, Arif Mardin and Jay Newland, for her debut album Come Away with Me, and it was released as her debut single in January 2002. The song is about lost love, with the singer left waiting for someone who never shows up.
