Iron Maiden's song is about a lasting fear of the dark.
"Fear of the Dark" was written by Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris and is the title and closing track of the band's 1992 album Fear of the Dark. The song describes a man who has always been intensely afraid of the dark and feels followed when he walks alone at night. Bruce Dickinson said Harris wrote it because Harris was himself afraid of the dark, and a live version later became a single.
