What it is

"Stand by Me" is a 1961 single by Ben E. King, written by King with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who produced it; it first appeared on an album with Don't Play That Song! in 1962. A gospel-style song of steadfast loyalty, it draws on the spiritual tradition: King cited Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander's 'Stand by Me Father' and Charles Albert Tindley's hymn 'Stand by Me', which is based on Psalm 46.
