The entire piece rests on the same short bass pattern repeating throughout, a predictable anchor the nervous system can settle into.
Pachelbel's Canon, formally the Canon and Gigue in D major, is a Baroque work by German composer Johann Pachelbel for three violins and basso continuo, of uncertain date (suggested dates range from 1680 to 1706). The canon is built on a repeating ground bass outlining an eight-chord progression, over which the three violins play the same melody in canon, entering one after another.
