Tics aren't a choice, and pity isn't what's needed. Understanding is.
Much of the distress around Tourette syndrome comes from other people's reactions: staring, assumptions that tics are deliberate, and pity.
A talk given at TEDxChristchurch 2015 by Analise Twemlow and her mother, Robyn Twemlow. Analise has Tourette syndrome, and Robyn founded the Tourette's Association New Zealand. In the talk, as Tourettes Action describes it, they argue that Tourette syndrome should be recognised as a disability in New Zealand and that treatment should be made available on that basis.
