Nina LaCour's 2017 young adult novel follows Marin, a college student in New York who has left her previous life in California behind without explanation. She stays alone in her dorm over winter break until her estranged best friend Mabel comes to visit. During the visit Marin must confront the grief, isolation and unspoken truths about what happened before she left, including events involving her grandfather.
