Loving a parent who's sick and wanting a break from them are not opposites.
Adult children of a parent with serious mental illness often carry guilt and mixed feelings that nobody around them understands.
Out of the Shadow is a 2004 documentary directed by Susan Smiley about her mother, Mildred Smiley, who has lived with schizophrenia for more than twenty years. Using interviews, home movies and photographs, it follows her mother's moves through psychiatric wards, nursing homes and group homes in Illinois.
