What it is

Janet Malcolm examines the relationship between writer Joe McGinniss and Jeffrey MacDonald, an Army doctor convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and two daughters. MacDonald invited McGinniss to write his story; McGinniss came to believe he was guilty but kept writing him warm letters while working on the book Fatal Vision (1983), and MacDonald learned the truth only when it was published.
