Andrew Jarecki's documentary began as a short film about children's birthday party entertainers in New York, including clown David Friedman. While researching it, Jarecki learned that David's father, Arnold, and younger brother, Jesse, had been arrested in the late 1980s in Great Neck, New York, and accused of sexually abusing boys who attended computer classes in the family home.
