Mellencamp's love ballad follows two small-town American teenagers and the sense that their youth won't last.
"Jack & Diane" is a 1982 song written and performed by John Mellencamp, then billed as John Cougar, and released as the second single from his album American Fool. The song tells a heartland love story about a young couple, which Billboard described as a blue-collar romance. In 2014 Mellencamp revealed that it was originally about an interracial couple and that his record company persuaded him to change it.
