Who it's for
Michael Stipe sings about friends going skinny dipping at night, drawn from the band's early days, and how those moments recede.

What it is
"Nightswimming" is a ballad from R.E.M.'s 1992 album Automatic for the People, released as a single in 1993. It describes a group of friends swimming together at night. Mike Mills has said it is based on the band and their friends in Athens, Georgia, in the early 1980s, and Michael Stipe has said it captures a lost innocence and is only partly autobiographical.
