Gillian Welch sings as an orphan with no family, looking toward a heavenly home where she'll be welcomed.
"Orphan Girl" is the opening track of Gillian Welch's 1996 debut album Revival, produced by T Bone Burnett; she wrote it alone. The song is sung by a woman with no family who has good friends but still longs for her relatives and asks God to reunite her with them in Heaven. Welch, who was adopted, has said she did not realize the song was autobiographical until after she finished writing it.
