For when the mirror feels unkind 🪞
Inspired by Candy Darling and written in the voice of a transgender woman, Lou Reed described the song as about a feeling everyone has when they look in the mirror and dislike what they see.
"Candy Says" opens The Velvet Underground's self-titled third album, released in March 1969. It is a delicate, melancholy song sung by bassist Doug Yule. Lou Reed wrote it with Candy Darling in mind, in the voice of a transgender woman describing her experiences, and said it was about something universal: looking in the mirror and not liking what you see.
