Stop trying to be their best American girl. 🎸
Mitski's song is about loving someone whose world and upbringing she can't fit into, and coming to accept her own background instead.
"Your Best American Girl" was the lead single from Mitski's fourth studio album, Puberty 2, released March 1, 2016. Its autobiographical lyrics express her wish for a romantic relationship while accepting that her identity and upbringing stand in the way. Mitski said the music video plays on the idea of, as a Japanese girl, never quite fitting in with a genre full of white American men.
