Set at a New England boarding school in December 1970, the film follows Paul Hunham, a strict and unpopular classics teacher assigned to supervise students with nowhere to go over the Christmas break. He ends up with Angus Tully, whose mother has left on a honeymoon, and Mary Lamb, the cafeteria manager grieving her son Curtis, who was recently killed in the Vietnam War.
