When Thanksgiving turns into a political debate again. Archie Bunker did it first. 🪑
By putting a bigoted working-class father and his liberal son-in-law under one roof, the show turns the political family argument into comedy, which gives viewers emotional distance from their own.
All in the Family is a CBS sitcom developed by Norman Lear from the British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part, which aired for nine seasons from 1971 to 1979. It centres on the Bunkers, a working-class family in Queens, New York: Archie, an outspoken and prejudiced man; his kind wife Edith; their daughter Gloria; and her husband Michael Stivic, whose countercultural views clash constantly with Archie's.
