Guilt doesn't stay buried. Sometimes it sleepwalks. 'Out, damned spot!' 🩸
Macbeth shows, in the space of a short play, how one crossed line produces the next, and how guilt surfaces through sleeplessness, hallucination and compulsive hand-washing rather than words.
William Shakespeare's tragedy, thought to have first been performed in 1606 and printed in the 1623 First Folio, follows Macbeth, a Scottish general whose ambition is stirred when three witches predict he will become king. Pushed on by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan and takes the throne.
