The Zone of Interest
The horror is never on screen. It's on the other side of the garden wall.
Who it's for
Most films about atrocity let the viewer identify with victims or heroes; this one sits you in the perpetrators' garden and lets you notice how easy it is to tune out what is happening over the wall.
Feelings it meets
What it is
The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on Martin Amis's novel and released by A24. In 1943, Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) raise their children in a comfortable home with a garden that shares a wall with the camp.
