Alphaville's anthem carries a longing to stay young, written in the shadow of Cold War fears.
"Forever Young" is a synth-pop ballad by the German band Alphaville, released in September 1984 as the third single from their debut album of the same name, with lyrics by Marian Gold. On the surface it celebrates youth, but it carries an undercurrent of fear about aging and death. It was written during the Cold War, and that period's anxiety is reflected in its wistful mood.
