What it is

"Death with Dignity" is the opening track of Sufjan Stevens's 2015 album Carrie & Lowell, a record inspired by the 2012 death of his mother, Carrie, and by childhood family trips to Oregon. Carrie left the family when Stevens was very young and was absent for most of his childhood. The song opens the album's reflection on grief and forgiveness toward a parent he only partly knew.
