A gentle island song for remembering 🌺

Who it's for

Kazufumi Miyazawa wrote it after visiting Okinawa, and it is widely known as a quiet lament shaped by the island's wartime losses, wrapped in Okinawan music and vocabulary.

What it is

"Shima Uta" is a song by the Japanese band THE BOOM, written by Kazufumi Miyazawa after a visit to Okinawa, where he toured the Himeyuri Peace and Memorial Museum, which tells how young women serving as volunteer nurses died during the World War II Battle of Okinawa; he later said he wanted to honor a survivor who had shared her story. The song first came out in 1992 and the band re-recorded it several times.
