John Darnielle draws on his teenage years in an abusive stepfather's house, singing about getting out and vowing to survive the year.
"This Year" is a song by The Mountain Goats from their 2005 album The Sunset Tree, which centers on the house where John Darnielle grew up, with his stepfather's domestic violence as a recurring theme. The song covers the period when Darnielle was 17, beginning to imagine freedom while still living in that home. It became one of the band's best-known songs and a frequent closer at their concerts.
