Phil Collins wrote this during the pain of his divorce, and it carries a dark, simmering bitterness.
"In the Air Tonight" is the lead single from Phil Collins's debut solo album Face Value, released in January 1981. Collins wrote it in 1980 amid grief over his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, improvising the lyrics in the studio over a set of chords. He has said he is not fully sure what the song means, but describes its emotional core as anger, despair and frustration.
