Who it's for

Stromae's song, whose title means 'Dad, where are you?', looks at a child searching for an absent father and what that absence does to a son.

What it is

"Papaoutai" is a 2013 song by Belgian artist Stromae and the lead single from his second album, Racine carrée. The title is a deliberately misspelled form of 'Papa, où t'es?' ('Dad, where are you?'). The song is about Stromae's father, who was largely absent from his life and was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and it also voices Stromae's fear of not knowing how to be a father himself.
