Who it's for

Pete Townshend wrote this out of a messy, disorienting night that left him questioning who he was amid fame and excess.

What it is

"Who Are You" is the title track of The Who's 1978 album Who Are You, written by Pete Townshend and released as a single in July 1978. Townshend wrote much of it after a grueling 13-hour meeting with manager Allen Klein and a night out drinking with Sex Pistols members Steve Jones and Paul Cook. The song opens with a policeman finding Townshend in a Soho doorway.
