What it is

"We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" is a song by Morrissey, co-written with guitarist Alain Whyte and produced by Mick Ronson, released on 27 April 1992 as the lead single from Your Arsenal. Morrissey said the lyrics address the competitive Manchester music scene and drew on his own experience of being upset when his old friend Simon Topping appeared on the cover of NME.
