Dusty Springfield's dramatic ballad, an English version of an Italian Sanremo hit, is a plea to simply keep a lover close even without love in return.
"You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" is Dusty Springfield's 1966 English-language version of the Italian song "Io che non vivo (senza te)," written by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini and introduced at the 1965 Sanremo Music Festival. Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell wrote the English lyrics. The song centers on a woman who asks only that her partner stay close and does not demand a declaration of love.
