Nina Simone's version of the Jacques Brel song is a heartbreaking plea for a lover not to leave.
"Ne me quitte pas" ("Don't leave me") is a song written and first recorded by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel in 1959, a plea to a departing lover. Brel wrote it after his relationship with Suzanne Gabriello ended, and later said he saw it less as a love song than as a song about how far men will humble themselves.
