What it is

"Brain Stew" is the tenth track on Green Day's fourth studio album, Insomniac (1995), and was released in 1996 as a joint single with "Jaded." Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the lyrics and the band composed the music. The song is about Armstrong's struggle with insomnia, which also gave the album its title; the demo was originally called "Insomniac.
