Mylène Farmer's French hit plays with gender ambiguity and not fitting expected roles.
"Sans contrefaçon" is the first single from Mylène Farmer's second studio album Ainsi soit je..., released in October 1987, with lyrics by Farmer and music and production by Laurent Boutonnat. The song is about gender ambiguity and androgyny and appears to draw on Farmer's childhood, when many people took her for a boy. It peaked at number two in France and became an anthem for the gay community.
