What it is

"Silent All These Years" is a song by Tori Amos from her debut solo album, Little Earthquakes, first released as a UK single in November 1991. Amos wrote it during a self-reflective period after her earlier album failed, while she was struggling to find her own voice; Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, in which the heroine gives up her voice, helped shape its idea of losing and reclaiming a voice.
