He got clean, felt something wake up, and wrote a 33-minute thank-you note with no words in it. Gratitude can be a whole album. 🎷

Who it's for

Coltrane's liner notes frame the album as a humble offering of thanks for a spiritual awakening he dated to 1957, the year he quit heroin, so the record gives listeners in or near recovery a model of turning survival into purpose rather than shame.

What it is

A Love Supreme is a jazz album by John Coltrane, recorded in a single session in December 1964 with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, produced by Bob Thiele and released by Impulse! in January 1965. It is a four-part suite (Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance and Psalm) in which the opening part turns a four-note motif into an overdubbed vocal chant of the title.
